Default Dire eye issue

I'm pretty sure this is probably an SL bug and not the av, but then again I saw it at the same time my friend saw it, so maybe not, so I'll post it here just as sort of a bug report.

Anyway, on the dire av, every so often, the eyes will do this:

(yes I know, homg nosezilla - screenshot taken by said friend, he noticed it and pointed it out to me, so I tried changing the eye color to get rid of it, then the checkerboard pattern turned to THAT color)

Anyway, after some toying around, I found that if I changed poses, of all things, it would go away. It happened a few times, no idea what triggers it if anything, but changing poses with the HUD (or getting up and walking, then plopping back where you were) seems to work to get rid of it. *shrugs*

Weird, harmless, but figured I'd mention it, if nothing else so if people go "oh crap my eyes are screwed up" they know they can get rid of it fairly easily.

This is a basic issue with 3d models and programs, called a Level of Detail (LoD) error. When 3d models are rendered at a distance the detail level is lowered to reduce rendering impact on the program.

The eyes are made up of two objects, one for the black iris and one for the background that is the color changing part. Normally they both change detail levels at the same time, but SL has an issue with LoD and doesn't always change correctly.

It's normally not a big deal, but because of the two eye parts being so close together when one part doesn't increase it's LoD properly it shows up like the picture you posted. Quickest way to 'fix' it is to zoom out a bit then back in, to toggle between the detail levels, and most times SL will change both correctly.

Ahh cool... and now I know more about how you manage to get things to change color without eating the whole prim. Same theory as how the tiger stripes and whatnot change on the full prim tigers and the like, I assume?

So much new stuff I've missed out on... lol

For the record, I have seen this too. On the Dire Wolf, it's more obvious than on some other avatars, simply because the eyes are so big! But on some other maker's avatars sometimes the entire eyes and forehead area will turn to the eye base color! Cylon Furries!

Changing camera distance a bit does help.

Thoughts for those with advanced building or texturing skills (not for the squeamish):

I also found that on some avatars, if you resized or moved the layers so the transparent and black layer was just a bit further from the underlaying coloring layer, the problem was reduced.

In some cases, another work-around may be to make a non-changing texture for the top layer, incorporating the desired color and the black parts all in one 24-bit texture, and eliminating the layer behind. You lose the ability to change or tweak eye color, but as a 24-bit texture on a single layer, it has fewer issues. I have had to do this on avatars from other makers, to be able to use hairstyles that used 32-bit textures, without having alpha-sort issues with their foreheads.

In SecondLife you can change your avatar to be whatever you want. THese are human second life avatars, wearing wolf avatars.
